Spring 2009 Firing Exercise
On April 18, 2009 the Wilton Militia held its annual spring firing exercise at Ambler Farm. The crew began by walking through several "dry runs" to be sure everyone knew the proper firing procedure. You can tell which photos are taken during this practice firing because the photographer was in front of the cannon. After the dry runs, the gun crew fired a number shots with black powder (no cannon balls). Ann Bell, president of Friends of Ambler Farm helped by lighting the fuse on several firings. After the exercise the cannon was cleaned and the crew declared they were ready for public demonstrations.

Firing Exercises May 2006
The first 2006 cannon and musket field practice for the Wilton Militia took place on Sunday, May 7th at Ambler Farm. For the first time we fired our newly restored Verbruggen cannon which is now historically correct and in beautiful condition. To recognize the Wilton Bank for funding the restoration, Nicki Brown, president of the bank, acted as bombardier to fire the first round for 2006. Wilton's First Selectman, Bill Brennan, and Bob Russell, former First Selectman, followed Nicki as honorary bombardiers.

Harvest Day 2005
There was much to be done at harvest time in early Wilton and many things that the family would do to prepare for the winter. On October 16 the Wilton Historical Society hosted the Harvest Day open house as an opportunity for people to see and even try their hand at some of these chores. The Wilton Militia also held a "training day" which, in the spirit of those early days, was considered a "holiday' and time for families to socialize, picnic and play.
The Wilton Militia took part in an afternoon of drills, musket and cannon firing, a military court martial, and a battle re-enactment, all on the grounds of the NCHS in New Canaan.
This is a photo album taken at the Wilton Historical Society's Family Day, May 29, and the Wilton Memorial Day parade, the following day. The weather was great for both days so there were many opportunities for good photos, especially of the kids trying their hand at being a "militiaman".
